But what are the three types of sewage pump? Here we delve a bit deeper.
Centrifugal pumps
These pumps are most widely used for the purpose of lifting sewage. Centrifugal pumps work on the basic principle of centrifugal force, and this action occurs when the sewage that enters into the pump is revolved at a very high speed through the use of an impeller. The sewage is thrown to the periphery of the surrounding environment by centrifugal force.
The advantage of the centrifugal pump is that it requires minimal space for installation and can also be easily installed, since this pump can also easily transport the suspended matter within the sewage without getting clogged up. Additionally, the pump can’t be damaged because of high pressure.
Reciprocating pumps
These pumps are generally not in use these days, and they may sometimes be used for pumping larger quantities of sewage against the low head. They typically come in two types, both propeller type and ram type. The ram-type consists of a closed cylinder in which a plunger or piston moves rapidly by the use of a connecting rod. The connecting rod is typically hinged with a wheel which is rotated by a motor.
During the suction stroke process, sewage can enter into the cylinder and during the delivery stroke, the sewage typically forces its way through the delivery pipe. In the propeller type of reciprocating pump, a propeller moves vertically inside the pump casing, causing the sewage to lift itself up.
Reciprocating pumps give constant discharge under variable heads, are flexible, durable, but is suitable for pumping larger quantities of sewage against the low head.
Air pressure pumps
Air pumps are used for pumping smaller quantities of wastewater, and consists of a tight tank into which wastewater flows by gravity. The wastewater is automatically forced whenever a sufficient amount of wastewater has accumulated to raise a float. Air pumps are incredibly efficient because they require minimum supervision, these pumps are not likely to be clogged, and they are typically found to be more economical because a smaller quantity of wastewater is required to be pumped.
